Illinois did what they needed to do last night. And in March that’s what matters.

Illinois knows Houston is a different animal and they can’t come out flat. Expect Kofi to get trapped or doubled often and they will get tons of three point opportunities. Houston likes to pack the lane and congest it. Houston is a top 10 team in scoring off second chance points and have the leading assist man in the country in Shead. Trent will have to be on his A- game defensively.

LAST NIGHT

Illinois had a good shoot around but their players would admit they really weren’t ready to be the aggressor. Maybe too much about last seasons loss to Loyola but once they got hit early, it was a brutal wake up call. Underwood after the game was pissed off because several times defenders didn’t react from the study guides each player receives. Leaving shooters open or not forcing guys to tough spots in the post. This was mainly in the first half. That lead to this slow start. Along with missed free throws. After the team got back to the hotel last night they watched Houston game and went over film. Underwood pinpointed specific mistakes and let them know…if it happens tomorrow they will be flying home losers tomorrow.

Trent Frazier has more than Just pink eye issues. He’s had issues nasally from the medication they originally gave him and swelling ensued. Several times last night Trent had issues dribbling or making post feeds because his eyes would get blurry when sweat got in his eyes. He told Brad and they gave him treatment at halftime. Trent felt really good today and his eye should be better for game time. Shoot around was upbeat.

Jacob Grandison was back last night but still getting back into playing and he wasn’t comfortable in his shoulder brace. It takes time and I’m told her was working it out and getting acclimated. He will be needed to shoot threes tomorrow. Can you blame him?

Damonte has a better game when you rewatch it than it first appeared. He got beat on some back door cuts because he was ball watching and trying to help on Plummers man. Trying to help out plummers defensive issues created buckets for Chattanooga. Underwood told Damonte at halftime to worry on his man and stop ball watching and trying to help cover for Plummer and things worked out pretty well.

Happy for Curbelo. He played like a carefree guy last night and even though he did care about fans ripping him he gave his own middle finger back with his play. This team wouldn’t of won without him. He’s a difference maker and it’s easy to see. We in good spirits and if you are on social media. Keep lifting his spirits.

12 hours from Tip with Sweet 16 at stake. This is where program belongs.

Brad spoke to the team last night once they got back to the hotel. He informed them that he plans on retiring from Illinois and will not pursue a different job. KSU is out! He is heavily involved in some very soon commitments to Illinois. Look for Belo and Kofi to return next year. We’re not going to rebuild but reload!
